Folate (Vitamin B9)

  • Cell division

  • Maintenance of genomic stability

  • Epigenetic regulation

Adequate dietary folate intake is important for overall health and normal cellular function. Some large meta-analyses suggest that diets rich in folate may be associated with a modest reduction in breast cancer risk, particularly among women who consume alcohol regularly.

Nevertheless, long-term use of high-dose folic acid supplements without medical indication is not recommended, as current evidence remains inconclusive and further research is needed to fully understand its role in cancer prevention.


Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is critical for:

  • DNA synthesis

  • Normal blood cell production

  • Nervous system function

  • Folate metabolism

Although vitamin B12 and folate metabolism are closely interconnected, there is currently insufficient evidence to recommend vitamin B12 supplementation specifically for the prevention of breast cancer or other breast diseases.


Antioxidant Vitamins (A, C, and E)

For many years, antioxidant vitamins were considered promising candidates for cancer prevention because of their ability to reduce oxidative stress caused by free radicals.

However, the majority of modern clinical trials and meta-analyses have failed to demonstrate that supplementation with vitamins A, C, or E significantly lowers the risk of developing breast cancer.

Consequently, major oncology and nutrition organizations recommend obtaining these nutrients primarily through a healthy, balanced diet rather than through high-dose supplementation.


What Is the Best Way to Obtain Vitamins?

Leading oncology and nutrition experts agree that the most effective strategy for supporting breast health includes:

  • A balanced and varied diet

  • Regular consumption of fruits and vegetables

  • Incorporation of fish and seafood into the diet

  • Whole-grain foods

  • Regular physical activity

  • Maintaining a healthy body weight

  • Limiting alcohol consumption

  • Avoiding tobacco use

Scientific evidence consistently demonstrates that overall lifestyle patterns have a far greater impact on breast health than any individual vitamin or dietary supplement.


Who Should Pay Special Attention to Vitamin D Status?

Certain groups are at increased risk of vitamin D deficiency, including:

  • Postmenopausal women

  • Individuals with overweight or obesity

  • People with limited sun exposure

  • Older adults

  • Certain patients with chronic medical conditions

In these populations, measuring serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels may be appropriate, with supplementation considered when deficiency is confirmed and under medical supervision.

Based on current scientific evidence, no vitamin should be viewed as a “magic bullet” for preventing breast cancer or other breast diseases.
